Building Control Surveyors

Knowle, Sidmouth (pending relocation to Honiton)

Full time – 37 hours per week

We currently have exciting opportunities within our Building Control team for two qualified Building Control Surveyors.  The Building Control service ensures that all buildings and structures comply with Building Regulations and all associated relevant sections of the Building Act to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people in and about buildings. 

Senior Building Control Surveyor

£31,401 - £35,229 per annum

As a Senior Building Control Surveyor, you’ll play a key part in ensuring that the Building Control Team provide a responsive and customer focused service by providing day to day support and operational assistance to our Building Control Surveyors.  You’ll also process Building Regulation applications and carry out Building Control enforcement work including dangerous structures and demolition sites by undertaking site inspections and making recommendations about appropriate enforcement action.   Furthermore, you’ll actively seek to promote Building Control services to secure future work in accordance with the Council’s Building Control Marketing Strategy. 

You’ll have a degree in building surveying or other relevant discipline and a corporate membership qualification in Building Control e.g. MRICS/MCABE.  A good practical understanding of primary building control legislation and enforcement processes and procedures is essential as is excellent IT skills and the ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team.  As this is a supervisory role, previous experience of mentoring and/or line management would be an advantage.  You’ll also need to have excellent written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to influence and negotiate with tact and diplomacy.

Building Control Surveyor

£28,221 - £30,756

As a Building Control Surveyor, you’ll process Building Regulation applications throughout the district, including conducting site inspections, completing plan checks and communicating outcomes clearly and directly with customers.  You’ll also carry out Building Control enforcement work including dangerous structures and demolition sites by undertaking site inspections and making recommendations about appropriate enforcement action.  

With a degree in building surveying or other relevant discipline and ideally, a corporate membership qualification in Building Control e.g. MRICS/MCABE, you’ll have a good practical understanding of primary building control legislation and enforcement processes and procedures and excellent IT skills.  You’ll also need to have excellent written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to influence and negotiate with tact and diplomacy and the ability to work on your own initiative.

A valid driving licence and your own car are essential for both positions (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).

East Devon District Council has decided to relocate away from its current headquarters in Sidmouth.  These positions will be based at Sidmouth (and or Exmouth) until new offices in Honiton become operational during the latter part of 2018.
